Steering from Manual to Data-Driven

Manual processes in foodservice distribution can be efficient, until they are not.

A case in point is transportation. Many foodservice distributors still rely on manual processes and local know-how to manage routes and deliveries. However, innovative technology strategies are enabling more powerful capabilities at a time of rising costs and labor pressures.

“Many companies are still using processes or systems that aren’t very robust,” said Cyndi Brandt, vice president, Fleet Solutions, Descartes U.S., which offers AI-powered technology solutions. “There is a lot of detail involved in wholesale distribution transportation and employees need to make adjustments in real-time.”

Brandt will be presenting on this topic at an IFDA Solutions Conference education session, along with Ryan Pelphrey, vice president, Enterprise Routing, US Foods. The session is titled “Future-Proofing Food Service Distribution Through Innovation and Efficiency.” It will be held Monday, Sep. 29.

“Many smaller companies still have Bob, who knows everything by using paper or standard routing in an ERP system,” Brandt continued. “But by focusing on a data-driven model, you can support real-time planning, proof of delivery and performance metrics.”

Data is crucial for understanding the correct real service times involved in deliveries. “Not having the correct real service time leads to super inefficient routes,” she said. “With data you can route more efficiently by customer.”

Descartes has benefitted from major investments in emerging technology across its organization. “We do something different with AI,” she explained. “AI is a shared service across our whole company and a major area for investment. We’ve made investments in multiple AI-based companies in the past few years. We are learning from all the applications using AI to support our solutions for routing and supply chain. We commit 15% of our revenue to R&D and innovation each year.”

The company also incorporates a strategic framework to add value over time for distributors. This framework — called PLAN | EXECUTE | ENGAGE | IMPROVE — enables ongoing building of new capabilities, Brandt explained.

Descartes will be an exhibitor at the Solutions Conference Expo and can be found in booth 529.
