Interactive Technology Spotlights Careers

At first glance the high school students appear to be playing video games.
But a closer look reveals they are engaging with highly interactive technology simulations of different careers — from commercial truck driver to forklift operator.
They are encountering these simulations at computer stations within a custom-designed semi-trailer that serves as a ‘mobile workshop’ for Be Pro Be Proud, a nonprofit and 501c3 charity.
One of the organization’s trailers will be on display at the IFDA Solutions Conference Expo. The vehicles, each of which house multiple computer stations, are used to engage with more than 100,000 students a year through school visits.
Hands-on interaction helps to interest students in workforce roles that are hard to fill in sectors such as distribution, transportation manufacturing and construction. Students discover aptitudes for certain roles, and it opens their eyes to new and unrealized opportunities, said Andrew Parker, executive director of Be Pro Be Proud. The program has metrics that relay success in encouraging students to pursue these types of careers.
An important aspect of the organization’s focus is addressing the perception of students, parents and educators that a four-year college degree represents the only realistic path.
“Many people look at technical and trade professions as second-choice opportunities, and we are explaining these can be options of first choice,” said Parker. “These roles eventually can lead students to have meaningful careers and become leaders and even entrepreneurs.”
Solutions Conference attendees can view these ‘cool’ and experiential learning stations. They will see examples of gamification with scoring, virtual reality and simulations of truck driving and robotics
The nonprofit has already built a relationship with Ben E. Keith and hopes its presence at the IFDA conference will help extend its reach in this industry by engaging with foodservice distributors, solution providers and others, Parker said.
Be Pro Be Proud relies on its relationships with companies, schools, associations, training organizations, educational institutions, recruiters and state governments and other stakeholders. It currently operates in eight states: Arkansas, South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, New Mexico, Alabama and Texas. It is actively adding additional states and has ambitious expansion plans as it nears its 10th anniversary.
