Diving Gradually into the AI Pool

Artificial intelligence has only just begun to transform foodservice distribution and much of this industry is still in the early stages of adoption.

For many organizations it makes sense to experiment and learn by applying AI strategies to existing warehouses before focusing on facilities yet to be constructed.

“While it’s often easier to bring AI into greenfield facilities, you can modify existing operations with AI to boost productivity and learn about the impacts,” said Jon Birdwell, Director of Warehouse Operations, Ben E. Keith Co. “From slotting to selection, you can dip your toes into AI solutions in current warehouses.”

As a 37-year veteran of this industry, Birdwell describes a quicker evolution of innovation and technology in recent years. “It used to be more about block and tackle,” he said. “It’s come a long way, and everyone is now considering how to best use AI.”

He shared his approach to fostering continuous improvement in his organization.

“I like to question the known and always find a new way,” he observed. “Things don’t have to stay status quo. Every year we change our existing processes for improvement.”

Emerging technology is a big focus of the IFDA Solutions Conference, from education sessions to the expo floor. Sessions on emerging technology innovation cover topics ranging from warehouse and fulfilment to transportation and safety. Birdwell, who chairs the Planning Council for the conference, said he is excited about attending sessions on topics this year ranging from AI to leadership. He is looking forward to navigating the expo, including to meet with first-time exhibitors.

He said the vetting process for conference speakers has continuously evolved to ensure that attendees have access to the widest range of experts. “We consider speakers from all over the world to share their expertise,” he elaborated.

Birdwell observed that data and emerging technology have been helping to accelerate aspects of the foodservice distribution business from buying practices to slotting, and that many opportunities lie ahead.

“AI will continue to make a big impact in this industry,” he concluded.
